UP Diliman (UPD) is the top performing school in the May 2023 Chemical Engineers Licensure Examination, ranking first among the six higher education institutions in the list of top-performing schools. UPD had a 96.67-percent passing rate.

To qualify as a top-performing school, the institution must have fielded 10 or more examinees and have at least an 80-percent passing rate.
Of the 29 passers from the Department of Chemical Engineering (DChE) of the UPD College of Engineering, three managed to enter the top 10.
They are John Vincent Yu, who ranked second place with an 89.10-percent rating; Ian Jason Ebio (3rd, 88.40%); and Jean Roven Gentolea (10th, 85.10%). According to the Professional Regulation Commission, 472 of 801 takers passed the examination administered in the National Capital Region, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Legazpi, and Rosales.
The Director of the Office of Gender Concerns (OGC) of the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU), Dr. Finaflor F. Taylan, will serve as the president of the Asian Association of Women’s Studies (AAWS) for 2023 to 2025.
AAWS is an organization that serves as a forum to promote and discuss feminist education and research in Asia. It recently concluded the 6th AAWS Congress 2023 last May 11-12, 2023, with the theme “Locating/Centering Women and Gender in the (Post) Pandemic Era of Advanced Technology” where Dr. Taylan presented her thoughts during one plenary session on “Revisioning Gender/ Women’s Studies in the Post Pandemic World” and a paper entitled “Online Gender Sensitivity Training Course as a Public Service Initiative: For Whom and for What” in a parallel session.
Dr. Finaflor F. Taylan served as AAWS Secretary General in 2014-2016 during the term of then UPOU Chancellor Dr. Grace Javier-Alfonso. Dr. Taylan was appointed director of the Office of Gender Concerns in 2015 until 2017. She resumed the post in 2022 after coming back from study leave when she pursued her doctorate degree at the University of Southern Queensland. She is also the program chair of the Diploma in/Master of Social Work program.

Twenty-six examinees from UPLB made the University proud after all of them passed the April 2023 Electrical Engineers Licensure Examination.
Lance Patrick Alarcon scored a rating of 92.10%, placing him in the third spot. Mark Jayson Salud placed sixth with a rating of 91.05%.
The licensure exam was conducted in NCR, Baguio, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Davao, Iloilo, Koronadal, Legazpi, Lucena, Pagadian, Palawan, Pampanga, Rosales, Tacloban, Tuguegarao, and Zamboanga (Kyle Ramiel Dalangin, with information from www.prc.gov.ph).
Forty-one out of 43 examinees from UPLB passed the April 2023 Civil Engineers Licensure Examination, garnering 95.35% passing rate for the University.
According to the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC), 5,887 out of 16,936 examinees successfully gained their licenses as the newest civil engineers in the country.

The University of the Philippines Diliman (UP Diliman) Institute of Civil Engineering has once again demonstrated its excellence in the field of engineering by topping the April 2023 Civil Engineer Licensure Examination with an impressive 95.12% passing rate. The Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) announced the results on April 28, 2023, revealing that 2,935 examinees took the test nationwide.
The UP Diliman Institute of Civil Engineering produced the highest-ranking passers in the examination, including Casmer Blah Dilangalen who ranked second, and Emilson Ryan Domanog Antes who ranked third. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to all the passers, particularly our graduates from the UP Diliman Institute of Civil Engineering, for their remarkable achievements.

A team of physicists, including a Filipino researcher, have found that existing theories don’t completely account for the mysterious behavior of high-temperature superconducting materials that have left even Nobel laureates stumped for decades. The team’s discovery, which promises to spark completely new lines of research, was published recently in the prestigious journal, Nature Materials.
Superconducting materials enable electricity to pass through them with no resistance, potentially allowing the creation of everything from magnetic-levitation trains to unprecedentedly powerful supercomputers. For a special kind of materials called high-temperature superconducting cuprates, superconductivity happens when electrons are removed in a process called “doping.”
Baffling even Nobel laureates for decades
Exactly how and why this happens is a mystery that has baffled even Nobel laureates. It was commonly thought, however, that when a large number of electrons are removed—that is, when cuprate superconductors are “overdoped”—they would behave as described by Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) Theory, which was developed in the 1950s and has been used ever since to help explain conventional superconducting materials.
But new experiments by a team of researchers supervised by Dr. Milan P. Allan of Leiden University in the Netherlands has shown that this is not the case. Filipino physicist Dr. Miguel Sulangi from the University of the Philippines – Diliman College of Science National Institute of Physics (UPD-CS NIP) collaborated with Dr. Allan’s team on the theoretical modeling of these materials.
“Our paper poses a challenge to the present understanding of cuprate superconductors at so-called ‘overdoping,’” Dr. Sulangi said. “This is the latest of a fresh round of papers showing that overdoped cuprates are not as conventional or ‘BCS-like’ as everyone previously thought they were.”
A deeper mystery than originally thought
Dr. Sulangi expressed hope that these new findings would not just rewrite textbooks but also spark new research interest in overdoped cuprates, which have largely been overlooked—particularly by scientists who believed that the materials’ superconductivity could simply be explained by traditional BCS theory. “We hope to convince experimentalists and theorists that these materials are anomalous and worthy of intense study. We want to provoke further research into this,” he explained.
“What makes this study important is that it not only clarifies the nature of overdoped cuprate superconductivity, but it also reveals that the mystery surrounding cuprate superconductors is deeper than we originally thought,” said UPD-CS NIP associate professor Dr. Kristian Hauser Villegas, who was not involved with the study. “It’s good to see more Filipino researchers working at the forefront of physics and other fields, shoulder to shoulder with international colleagues. Hopefully, this encourages more Filipino kids to pursue science and add to our collective contributions to the growth of human knowledge,” he added.
