It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Azucena P. Pestaño, former faculty of UP High School in Iloilo. Ma’am Pestaño passed away today, 08 August 2023, surrounded by her loved ones.

Ma’am Pestaño was an instructor at UPHSI from 1989 to 1995. She became a lecturer from January 3 to October 31, 1996. She was a passionate gender advocate and was well-loved by her colleagues and students.

Rest in eternal peace, Ma’am Pestaño!

Dr. Luis Camara Dery (1946-2023)

The National Historical Commission of the Philippines and the Local Historical Committees Network expresses their sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Dr. Luis Camara Dery on the news of his passing last 31 July 2023.

Many of us encountered the name “Luis C. Dery” in historical works on the areas of Local, Political, Social, Cultural Histories of the Philippine Society from Pre- Colonial Period to World War 2.Born on 8 March 1946 in Gubat, Sorsogon, he moved to Metro Manila for his college educationat University of the Philippines – Diliman. After graduating in 1964, he pursued a master’sdegree and later a PhD in History, completing his studies in 1971 and 1987 respectively.

Dr.Dery is a giant in local history research wherein he was able topublish historical books on various topics that are considered as essential readings in Philippinehistoriography. His publications comprise rare Filipiniana publications related toDr. Jose Rizal during the Spanish period and the early Philippine Republic. Some of his booksare Alay Sa Inang Bayan, Pestilence in the Philippines, and, The Army of the First PhilippineRepublic and other historical essays.He also served as President of the PhilippineHistorical Association in 2013-2014.

In his passing, we remember his profound contributions and the trails he blazed in his pioneering work and steady commitment to the growth and development of Philippine historiography.

Conradoliberato R. Aparato (1962-2023)

With great sorrow and a heavy heart, we announce the passing of our dear colleague, Sir Jake Aparato. His remains lie at the Loyola Memorial Chapels & Crematorium (Truth Chapel), Commonwealth Avenue, Quezon City, until Tuesday, July 25. Cremation will be on July 25, 2023, at 3:00 pm.

We take this opportunity to invite you to the funeral tribute to Sir Jake at the memorial chapel or through a recorded message. Prof. Jocelyn J. Pacheco (1598-2023)

The Department of Physical Education mourns for the loss of a former Head and a dedicated faculty who served the university for more than 30 years.

Our retired faculty Prof. Jocelyn J. Pacheco has passed away last July 4, 2023 after a long battle with cancer.

To pay homage and tribute to Prof. Pacheco, the department will hold a Necrological Service and public viewing on July 10, 2023 at 9:00AM, Pidlaoan Hall, CFOS, UPV Miagao Campus.

Her remains will be brought to her home at Padang, Patnongon, Antique after the memorial service. Her interment will be on July 15, 2023 at 2:00 P.M.

For the friends and students of Prof. Pacheco, her wake is scheduled on July 7-9, 2023 at Lot 3 block 2, 2nd St. Ext. Villa Francisca Subdivision, Brgy. Bolong Oeste, Sta. Barbara, Iloilo.

Rest in peace ma’am Jo. We will miss you!
