Huwag mataranta.”\nUpdates on COVID-19\n\nThe Philippines is currently witnessing a worrying uptick in COVID-19 cases. This resurgence\, attributed to the highly transmissible Omicron sub-variants and relaxed restrictions\, raises questions and health-related concerns. Meanwhile\, China grapples with a puzzling cluster of influenza-like illness among children in its northern regions. The unknown etiology of this illness\, coupled with the ongoing COVID-19 situation\, has sparked concerns about a potential public health crisis.\n\nIn this week’s episode of Stop COVID Deaths\, our esteemed panel of experts will discuss the current caseload\, vaccination rates\, and potential healthcare system pressures. They will also discuss the effectiveness of existing control measures and explore feasible mitigation strategies to navigate our current situation.\n\nOur main presenters are Dr. Enrique A. Tayag\, who serves as Undersecretary and is also the official spokesperson of the Department of Health\, and Dr. Rontgene M. Solante\, who is a practicing infectious diseases specialist and the current President of the Philippine College of Physicians. Our reactor is Dr. Christia S. Padolina\, who serves as the City Administrator for Navotas City. The Synthesis and Closing Remarks will be delivered by Dr. Joanne Karen S. Aguinaldo\, who is the Chief of the Division of Family Planning\, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology\, UP Philippine General Hospital.\n\nWe hope that in this episode\, we will be able to bridge the knowledge gap and empower individuals to play a proactive role in safeguarding public health. So that together\, we can stop preventable deaths!

SUMMARY:Decolonizing English Studies Through Affect: A Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:The UP CIDS Decolonial Studies Program is holding a roundtable\, Decolonizing English Studies Through Affect on Saturday\, 9 December 2023\, 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm\, Center for Integrative and Development Studies\, Ang Bahay ng Alumni\, UP Diliman\, Quezon City. The roundtable will also be broadcast via Zoom (sign-in required)\, and is free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come\, first-served basis.\n \nRegistration here to attend\n\nTHE ROUNDTABLE\n\nStudies of English in the country have mostly focused on English language teaching and learning\, the spread and use of English in the Philippines from a World Englishes paradigm\, and a discourse and stylistic approach to the study of texts written in English. While there is a body of critical work that challenges the notion of ‘English’ and ‘English Studies’ as deployed in mainstream work and proposes alternative ways of studying English\, the use of ‘affect’ as an analytical category within a decolonizing perspective has not been explored.\n\nThis project aims to respond to this gap by demonstrating the usefulness and relevance of affect in making sense of\, interrogating\, and refiguring English Studies. It specifically considers the burden and trauma of the country’s colonial past and neocolonial present\, the complexities and promise of a diverse multilingual reality\, continuing linguistic and social inequalities\, and a strong Western bias in knowledge production and consumption.\n\nThe project hopes to foreground four possible areas of affective inquiry in this roundtable discussion: 1) the learners’ lived realities of English vis-à-vis other languages in the Philippines; 2) the anxiety surrounding English; 3) methodological challenges in the study of affect and English; and 4) pedagogical possibilities for teaching English literature.\n\nSPEAKERS\n\nJEAN AARON DE BORJA\nDEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH AND COMPARATIVE LITERATURE\,\nCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND LETTERS\, UP DILIMAN\n\nJEREMY DE CHAVEZ\nDEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH\nFACULTY OF ARTS AND HUMANITIES\nUNIVERSITY OF MACAU\n\nJULIUS MARTINEZ\nDEPARTMENT OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES\,\nNIIGATA UNIVERSITY OF INTERNATIONAL AND INFORMATION STUDIES\nKRISTINE MARIE REYNALDO\nDEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH AND COMPARATIVE LITERATURE\,\nCOLLEGE OF ARTS AND LETTERS\, UP DILIMAN\n\nRUANNI TUPAS\nDEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION\, CULTURE\, AND MEDIA\nINSTITUTE OF EDUCATION\, UNIVERSITY COLLEGE LONDON\n\nUP CIDS and the Decolonial Studies Program\n\nView the vicinity map. Most recently\, it published a discussion paper\, “Decolonizing Religion: Wishful Thinking or a Real Possibility?\,” which can be downloaded for free.\n\nThe UP Center for Integrative and Development Studies (UP CIDS) is a policy research unit of the University that is mandated to encourage collaborative and rigorous research addressing issues of national significance. Currently\, it has 12 research programs.
